Auditions Ahead for Coward Classic

It’s all go at Rep again with the final rehearsals well underway for ‘The Stars Go Down’ written by Joan Rosier-Jones, and directed by Kerry Girdwood, which will play September 13th and 15th at 7pm. This thrilling literary event is being staged as part of the Whanganui Literary Festival – tickets only $5 each (door sales only). Our next major presentation will be the end of year production, the classic comedy ‘Blithe Spirit’ by Noel Coward.

This sparkling and witty play features some of Coward’s most colourful characters, most notably the eccentric medium ‘Madame Arcati’ (portrayed so memorably in the film version by Margaret Rutherford) who triggers a hilarious chain of events when a séance she conducts goes horribly wrong. Auditions for this terrific play will be held at Repertory this Sunday from 2pm and there are seven great comedy roles on offer.

CHARLES CONDOMINE
Played by Rex Harrison in the film version, the actor required for this leading role, can be aged anywhere from late thirties to early fifties. The character is a witty, suave and sophisticated writer – the typical Noel Coward male lead.

RUTH CONDOMINE
Charles’s second wife, can be aged from thirties to late forties, slightly brittle in attitude and subject to piques of jealousy.

ELVIRA CONDOMINE
Charles’s first wife, can be aged from early thirties to late forties, full of energy, flirtatious and quick-witted. A strong character.

MADAME ARCATI
Eccentric psychic medium, can be aged anywhere between forty and seventy. Larger than life with a strong theatrical style and rich voice. Needs good comedy.

DR BRADMAN
A supporting role, friend of the Condomines, can be aged thirties to fifties, typical upper-middle class professional.

MRS BRADMAN
A supporting role, wife of Dr Bradman and of a similar age.

EDITH THE MAID
Cockney maid, any age from late teens to thirties. Doesn’t have many lines but needs especially good comedy skills – particularly physical comedy timing. Needs to be funny in expression and physical attitude (and reactions) without saying very much.

If you’ve ever fancied ‘treading the boards’ at Repertory do come along to auditions this Sunday. The production will rehearse from early October for eight weeks and will perform in early December.
