Classic Farce comes to Repertory

It’s terrific that Repertory has a brand new committee (headed by president, Max Restieaux)  with eleven enthusiastic committee members all eager to push ahead with an exciting programme of plays and other events taking us to the end of the year (and beyond). We have a great play by local writer Joan Rosier Jones lined up for the Literary Festival in September followed by a wonderful song-and-dance show by Peter Hall in October, but first up on the agenda is a well-deserved revival of a classic comedy Habeas Corpus.

Habeas Corpus is a fabulously funny play, written by master wordsmith Alan Bennett and first staged in 1973. It’s a very clever send-up of the traditional British farce and, as such, is packed with a glorious cast of stock-in-trade characters including the obligatory henpecked husband, platinum blonde bombshell,  flat-chested spinster and sex-starved vicar.

The wonderfully convoluted plot centres on the seemingly upstanding Wicksteed family, residents of a well-heeled British seaside town, and the mix-ups, misunderstandings and mistaken identities that occur when three strangers come into their midst – with one of them set on revenge.  Eleven colourful characters make up the cast of this fast-paced show and the challenge is now on to find the right group of actors.

Auditions for this brilliant play will be held at Repertory on Sunday 5th June at 2pm with rehearsals starting soon after and we are encouraging as many people as possible to come along and audition. The cast comprises of six male roles and five female roles with a wide range of playing ages from early twenties to late sixties (or even older).
